Most people at some point will become involved in a dispute with another party. It might be a contractor who damaged your home, a roofer who did not fix a leak, or a driver who rear-ended you while you were stopped at a traffic light. Most of these disputes may be resolved without involving lawyers or the court system. Some, however, will escalate into civil lawsuits.
Unlike criminal prosecution, civil action is a lawsuit brought to court in order to receive damages or to recover a right. Civil litigation can involve disputes between individuals, businesses, corporations, or non-profit organizations.
A civil litigation lawsuit is started as soon as the plaintiff files a written complaint with the court. The defendant will then respond with a written "answer" to the complaint.
After the answer is filed, the parties normally engage in the "discovery" process. At this point the parties will learn about all the facts involved in the case in order to prepare the trial. The discovery process includes witness questioning and answering, the exchange of documents, as well as written questions, known as "interrogatories".

If you or your business is involved in a civil matter and would like to learn more about your options, please contact our office.
